BC's rent increase rules, in plain terms
- One increase every 12 months. At least 12 months must pass since the last increase took effect, or since the tenancy began if there hasn't been one.
- Three full months' written notice on the Residential Tenancy Branch's Notice of Rent Increase form (RTB-7). The months are counted in full rent periods, so for rent due on the 1st, notice received in January means the increase can start May 1 at the earliest.
- No more than the yearly limit set by the province, based on the year the increase takes effect. Asking for more needs RTB approval.
- Allow for delivery. A notice sent by mail is treated as received five days later, and one posted on the door or in a mail slot three days later.
